Anton Čierny and Ivan Jurica
BEFORE THE PARLIAMENT IS ON FIRE
Screening of the video-movie: Tuesday, June 27, 2017, 6 pm
Opening speech: Mira Sikorová-Putišová
In their project, Anton Čierny and Ivan Jurica are trying to reflect upon the current growth of right-wing extremist radicalization in Slovakia. Their observation of the topic is twofold: it is the promises of the rightist ideologies on one hand, and on the other hand, the historicization of fascism in Slovakia from the end of the Slovak state to today, that is, the era of CSSR from the end of the 2nd World War. The focal point of the project lies in selected original Slovak (Czechoslovak) films: Captain Dabač (1959), Organ (1964), The Shop on Main Street (1965), Veľká noc a veľký deň (Great Night and Great Day, 1974), V hodine dvanástej (At Twelve O’Clock, 1958). The artists used some of the dialogues from the films and reinserted them into the contemporary situation in order to draw attention towards the recurring rhetoric and following of certain narratives in contemporary Slovak society. The video-movie takes place in unspecified historical times but the individual scenes are situated in specific locations: the spring of the national river Nitra, High Tatras, Andrej Hlinka Mausoleum, the village of Rákoš, not far from Revúca, etc. In the historical and contemporary context, these places amplify the sense of reality and actuality.
